Lough Leane is the largest of the three 'Lakes of Killarney'. The other two lakes are Muckross Lake (also known as the Middle Lake), and the Upper Lake. The three lakes lie in a mountain-ringed valley starting in the Black Valley. The surrounding mountain consist of Purple, Tomies and Shehy Mountain to the west, and Torc Mountain to the south of Muckross Lake. The River Laune flows from Lough Leane from the north towards Killorglin and into Dingle Bay.
